FAQ's
What is the playschool?   CHCPS is a cooperative, wholly parent staffed playschool for Capitol Hill 2 year olds. Parents of the enrolled children commit to working 2-3 mornings per month to supervise play and bring snacks. There is no additional staff. We meet either one or two mornings per week (see below) in a sunny, basement room at The Lutheran Church of the Reformation at 212 East Capitol Street, NE. CHCPS is non-denominational. The CHCPS experience provides a warm, supportive environment for 2-year-old play as well as giving parents the opportunity to meet other families in the neighborhood.

What is the parent commitment? Answer: 2-3 mornings per month + administrative duties.   The playschool remains affordable because of the 2-3 mornings a month co-oping requirement for parents with enrolled children. Two parents who are "on-duty" run each playschool group - one parent has the "Activity" role and the other brings the day's snack. Both parents supervise play. Co-oping duty is required and can only be fulfilled by a parent (not a grandparent, baby sitter or friend). Additionally, parents volunteer to serve in various roles of responsibility for general oversight of the playschool (e.g., purchasing supplies, communicating with the church, organizing registration).

When is the playschool in session? Answer: September - June.   The playschool year begins in September and ends in June following the calendar of the DC Public School System. The playschool year has two sessions: 1) September - December; 2) January - June. Children must be two years old by December 31st to participate.

How many mornings does the playschool meet? Answer: 2 mornings per week or 1 morning per week.   There are three separate playschool groups: Monday/Wednesday; Tuesday/Thursday; or Friday only. (2 mornings/wk or 1 morning/wk). Generally the hours are from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

How many children are in the playschool? Answer: 10 per group, 30 total.   Each playschool morning group consists of 10 children for a total of 30 children in the program.

What is a play school morning? Answer: FUN.   A play school morning is informally structured but can include playtime with the many playschool toys, arts and crafts, a trip to the small playground, songs, and other favorite 2-year-old activities. There is a mid-morning snack time and the day usually ends with lunch. Two parents supervise each group meeting.

How much does it cost? Answer: $100 to $200 per year (+ $25.00 application fee).   The application fee is $25.00 (non-refundable). Tuition is currently $100 per session (or $200 per year) for the two-day groups and $50 per session (or $100 per year) for the Friday only group.

CHCPS follows the closing schedule for DC public schools for holidays, snow days and the like. Therefore, if DC public schools are cancelled or have a two-hour delay for inclement weather, then the playschool is closed. DCPS half-days do not affect the playschool schedule.
