Growing Rye Grass

Providing a classroom of children an experience in growing seeds can be daunting for a teacher not comfortable with science.  The following lesson is perhaps the simplest way to give the children such an experience and they loved it!  Over and over, they would report that their grass was "this big"!

Recommended children's literature:  "The Garden", Frog and Toad Together, by Arnold Lobel;  I'm a Seed by Jean Marzollo.

First we decorated our pots - just let them draw on a styrofoam cup.

Second, we counted out five spoons of top soil to add to the cup, then put in our seeds and gave our miniature garden two more spoonfuls of soil.  Of course, we also watered it - just a little!

And, within a few days, VOILA!!
