Museum Activities Our field trips to Discovery Creek Children's Museum

The Discovery Creek Children's
Museum has been an active partner for "Energy in the Garden." In
addition to planning and conducting our educators' workshop (see:
teacher's workshop materials), museum staff members came to
Peabody to conduct a culminating activity to help the children understand the
food chain (see: Constructing knowledge:
"How do we get Energy
from the Sun?")
In addition, the children were able to participate in a
museum program entitled "Ready Set Grow" at the Glen Echo Site of the
Discovery Creek Children's Museum (see: "Ready, Set, Grow").
Eight classes of pre kindergarten and kindergarteners went to the Museum during
March, 2002 for this program.
First, Museum
educators Kim Lowther and Audra Kelly played a game with the children.
The children had five seconds to run under a parachute and find something that they
could eat that came from a plant. We talked a lot about where the food
comes from and especially about wheat because so much of what we eat comes from
wheat -- like, cereal, noodles, bread, cookies and much more.
We were able to look at the wheat and especially
the seeds.
Then we tried to grind the wheat. It took a
lot of work and we only got a little bit of flour.
We were able to plant a seed
of a plant to
take home.
After we did all that, we said thank you to the
plants for giving us our energy and we gave awards to some of the plants that
are grown at the museum and give us or the animals food.
